when i woke up today the skimmer was half full with water and when i got back 4 hours later there was foam spilling out on top of the skimmer. needless to say i unplugged and emptied it there were tons of nasty stuff in it which is good but my question is how did it fill up that fast. I also adjusted the skimmer up higher so it wont fill up so fast

Anything die or did you change foods or over feed ? Then again sometimes simply a sudden or extreme barometric pressure change will make them go crazy This is really common with the larger more commercial skimmers , Also the reason I suggest to all they should run a good skimmer with a proper collector and then the skimmer will shut its self down rather then to overflowing all over.

It is still in the break in period. Just keep an eye on it.

Some skimmers tend to do that when you set them up. As it's breaking in, the walls get lined with sludge which makes it easier for the bubbles to rise up into the collection cup. We usually notice that the collection power really kicks in at some point. If you don't have too much crud in your tank, the collection will take place really fast and slow down drastically just like yours did. It shouldn't happen again unless something dies, you add new rock, or you clean the skimmer itself out (not the cup). At least that's been our experience... :)
