Hi there, anybody who can assist - I bought a Reeftek TS1 three weeks ago and the last two weeks it was really doing a great job with good dry skimmate. Today I did a 50% waterchange and almost immediately the skimmer started to overflow. Is there any body who can tell me the reason for this, please? and what I now should I do to correct it?

Somehow you now have more water soluable proteins or lipids. What salt? Any additives?
Can't you adjust the water flow/height?

For waterchanges I buy my salt water from the lfs. Might be as a result of the change in the chemicals. I have read somewhere that the skimmer need to be switched of for a couple of hours, will try and see if it help.

Why on earth would you do a 50% water change? That is such a tremendous change in water chemistry. To do such a change, you really need to make sure all the parameters of the new salt, match the tank, or you'll end up destabilizing the system and causing more harm than good. To be honest, with such a big change in chemistry, I'd be surprised if your skimmer didn't overflow.

Also, I would be especially cautious if buying saltwater from an LFS. It's probably unfair to assume the worst of all of them, but all too often, their water turns out to basically be tap water. It seems more often than not, the RO/DI filters get neglected and they don't change them as they should and it ends up being pretty nasty water. If your adding saltwater that has a lot of crud in it, it can also cause your skimmer to overflow.

10-15% water change is usually a lot, after that, you really need to pay attention and match the parameters. More small water changes is easier to keep things stable.

50% water change just sounds unusual  I only did 10 to 20% biweekly
