Hey guys I've been gone for about a month working on hurricane sandy restoration. My tank survived my wife taking care of it. When I returned the skimmer had been overflowing way bad to the point it was just basically water and spitting micro bubbles everywhere. I took it apart cleaned it with no change even on lowest setting.
I did a water change when I got home new filter socks and got rid of a bunch of cyno. So in not sure. It has had no change at all for 4 days now

I've moved it around from the original 7" to 5" barely covering pump and to 11"

Put a hose into the drain plug, set the open end in a bucket, and let it go. There is something in your water causing that. I get it too. After a while it skims it out and is back to normal.

I actually had this happen not too long ago as well. I got home from work and I could hear water splashing. It was my skimmer. The gate valve hadn't been adjusted on it in months ... and nothing new was introduced including any kind of food ... but water was pouring out of my collection cup like crazy.

I took the cup out, cleaned it ... put it back in and never touched the valve, and presto, back to normal ... what the heck!

I don't have a solution for you ... just a similar experience and I have no idea why

I would check the o rings on teh adjustment valve and the air intake hose to make sure it not cloged.
