I am now really ready to start my tank, but I am somewhat overwhelmed by the skimmers available. My local dealer is recommending one of the HOB CPR's and that may be just fine, but I'm wondering about the Reef Octopus 300 or others in that line. I'm ok with spending a little more money for something better that I won't want to upgrade later. I also would like one that doesn't have to be changed or cleaned as often. Any suggestions?

How many gallons is your tank?
Since you're looking at an Octopus 300, I assume you have a sump. Is that true?
Is it a reef tank? If so, what kind of corals do you intend to keep?

No I don't have a sump and don't plan on one. I thought with the HOB's a sump was not necessary. I have a 36 gal. bow front. I will be doing a reef w/fish and will start out with soft leather? corals. My local dealer is great to ask questions of and will help me, I just know it's best to get different ideas all around. Thanks.

Sorry. My mistake. I was thinking of the Octopus Extreme 300 which requires a sump. The 300 doesn't. Either of those skimmers are more than enough for your application.

So now I'm curious to know how they compare with the CPR's

I had a CPR, now I have a octopus BH-1000. I love it. In my opinion the octo performs way better than the CPR and is quieter too. Although it still makes some noise. :)

twobjustme: You may want to look into CPR's new AeroForce HOB skimmer. This little guy has gotten some great reviews! It would be perfect for your tank size, and you would be supporting the good ol' US of A. Namely, a small town in California ;)

How fun for you!! I love buying "stuff" :p
