    Quick q,

am using an octopus skimmer that I just got. someone said to run it wide open to break it in. Does this mean that the valve (where the water comes back out) should be set so the most water flows out of it, or the least?

with most water flowing out, this means the bubbles don't travel as far up the tube.

Does this make sense? Sorry, new to skimmers.

I think this means to run your skimmer at full so that the bubbles/water can get the skimmer housing cleaned and coated for skimming. Not sure if this will get you through the break in period faster but I guess it cant hurt. One word of caution is that you need to watch your levels if your going to "blast" the pump. Eventually as the skimmer starts to get closer to the point where its actually doing its job the water level inside will rise considerably. That will give you an overflow in the collection cup which in turn will overflow back into the sump. Break in periods for skimmers are different from model to model and I'm almost certain water conditions has something to do with it. If your tank is new and your not feeding or adding nutrients your not going to get much action anyhow. Hope this helps.
