Skimmer Upgrade

So, I've decided I'm not quite satisfied with my locally built needle wheel skimmer.

I just can't seem to get it dialed in properly, or, the thing just sucks.

I've tried raising the water level. Lowering the water level. I got an air control valve and today I raised the water level and lowered the air. Now, don't get me wrong, I do get some skimmate (about 1/4 inch of brown water every 2-3 days). I think the bioload I have warrants just a bit more, or at least, darker skimmate - especially when I see poo settling at the bottom of the sump - it should probably be pulling more out than what it does. The foam sometimes dissapears in the neck and just fizzes for a while, then builds back up. I'm a bit annoyed with it.

What's everyone's thoughts on the ASM G-1? Anyone have luck with the new Marineland 100? I see there's a thread on it, but I don't see anyone give it a good solid endorsement, and a few folks say gaskets / etc. are busted on it which I don't want to deal with.
