I have a reef octopus extreme in sump skimmer that works great when it's running. The problem is that every time it stops running because of a power outage or I unplug it. I have to lift it out of the sump which is really hard to do because there isn't enough head room under my stand. Then once it's out of the water or I mess with it for a while it will start running again. Any ideas why it does this? I did clean it out and the problem persisted.

This is the skimmer I have.

I had a red sea skimmer that behaved like that. I think the magnetic impellers have trouble getting started against a load. I finally stopped using it because of this. You might contact octopus to get a new motor.- Paul

Is there any calcium deposit around the impeller or the impeller chamber? If so, try soaking both in some vinegar to dissolve it. I had this happen before and this cleaned it right up so it would start easily.

+1 on the vinegar, I had the same problem and was recommended to do the same thing - it worked great for me too.

No Calcium that could see but if the Vinegar helped you guys it's worth a try. By chamber you mean the actual pump that the impeller is inserted into along with the impeller itself?
