I have a canister filter, i really tried of it. It seems to be doing a good job at filtering and keep my levels well but i hate the maintenance on it. To keep it up ill be spending more money on the stuff to keep it up than it actually cost. I want a protein skimmer but i don't know it i really need on being that my tank is on 36 gallons. Should i get one? And which one would be best. Im doing a coral reef tank.

If you are trying to have corals then you need a skimmer, if you have fish that is. There are several brands that offer skimmers that would be perfect for your sized tank.

A sump is a smaller sectioned tank that is kept underneath the display tank. It gives you system extra water volume. Depending on each setup, the basic is the water from the display drains into one section, then goes through either a skimmer section or refugium section, the to the return section where there is a pump returning the water back into the display tank. Every sump is different but that's the basics of one.
