    when looking at a skimmer do you get one big enough just for your tank or get one big enough for your whole system...sump and tank

    120 gallon DT 48*24*24
    50 gallon fuge
    50 gallon sump

    any advice on skimmers

    The answer is; for the entire volume of water. So, tank and sump, however that will not be the entire water volume, you should subtract the rock and substrate. This is more for economics sake as figuring out the water volume will allow you to get the skimmer for the water volume you have which could be a slightly smaller skimmer, saving you some money.
