Hi guys, I am new to the hobby and I have just got a 120 gallon tank and would like to know what would be a good protein skimmer to use for it. I am planning to have a sump under tank and would like the skimmer in it

    Tks Jamie

I'm running one of these, and will tell you quality is the highest I've seen from any company so far. IMO this would be one of the best you could put on your tank.

    Xtreme 160 Protein Skimmer

This one would also do very well for you. I haven't tried a cone skimmer out yet, but I hear they are amazing.

XTREME Cone Protein Skimmer Mini S

I also hear good things about the Aqua C Skimmers.

    Urchin Pro

Lastly you should look at the Coralife 220. I don't like HOB skimmers for use in sump, because the way they're plumbed just isn't as efficient. I ran a Coralife 125 for awhile and it does perform pretty well for the price.

Coralife Super Skimmer Venturi Wheel - up to 220 Gallon

IMO you should always run a skimmer that is rated for more than your tank, to combat companies inflating the specs on their products.

divott asked the right questions. A sump is a must in my inexperienced mind. There is so much STUFF... I don't want all the clutter in view. Figure out your whole system first and plan it out.

    Sump - Yes or No
If Yes... Refugium? Yes or No
Two-Part Dosing, Manual Dosing or Ca Reactors?
    GFO/GAC Reactors?
    Controller?
    ATO??

If you start with the end in mind it will go much smoother.

    Just my thoughts,
    Mark
