I read an article the other day about skimmers being bad for nano tanks. Reasons given are, they quickly kill off the pod population, and removing to much of the nutrients. What say you all? I'll find the article and post the link later :)

I am a huge skimmer advocate, but I have used nano skimmers before (as in a skimmer rated for 20 gallons max.) and it didnt do much of anything. First of all, if you are doing anything right there shouldnt be all that much dissolved organic materials. lol Anything a skimmer does could be easily done by doing regular water changes. And doing these water changes would replenish used nutrients and minerals anyway. So I wouldnt use a skimmer on a nano tank. Its really not worth it. Just take the extra money and buy quality salt. It will get you alot further than an overpriced piece of plastic that probably wont pull much skimmate anyway.

I think skimmers are not good for new tanks and for tanks that are very small that done have alot of population but other than that I like skimmers,I would only be worrying if I had a nano on the thought of it taking away nutrients, especially if your dozing because that would seem useless.

FWIW, I've seen larger reef tanks (40g+) that have been running for 6 years+ without a skimmer, so regardless of the reason, it most certainly can be done with a nano. As norg stated, just do regular water changes with a quality reef-grade salt mix and you'll be fine.

no you don't have to have a skimmer, my wife has a 24g for over 5 years with no problems, it has 3 fish, now that being said,if you won't a heavier bioload then that i would put in a sump with a skimmer the reason being to handle the extra food for the fish and to oxygenate the tank, a skimmer will help alot in this regard i like an oxygen rich tank a great skimmer will produce this affect, when the lights go out a skimmer helps to keep oxygen going to the tank it really is a great piece of equipment.

my 29g has no skimmer and has been running healthy for about a year. looking to add the hydror slim skim to help pull tiny particulates from the water that WCs and my filters don't pick up. think its a good idea, will probably just have to dose with Coral-Vite more regularly
