I have been around dog trainers some, I know the shock collar will only work on a very smart dog because the dog will not relate the shock to the bark most of the time as well as most dogs don't respond to negative discipline well. There is no short cut on training your pet, but most of the time it's not the pet that needs to learn how to change it's behavior. The pack will always respond to the pack leader, but the leader needs to know how to lead.

that is not good to hear! The dogs feed off of each other all the time. One good thing, the dogs respond poorly to any type of negative stimulation. Am thinking one of the dogs will break very easily, the other two not so much. They are all TERRIERS and the most hard-headed creature on the face of this earth!

I believe in that truly! Sadly I ruined the two dogs when they were puppies as I was not in a good place to provide discipline to them and they walked all over me. Plus these two are dumb as a box of rocks:eek: they are mentally defective. The other dog came in and got ruined because of the other two dogs. He is really really smart and I think he will pick it up fast!

I am going to look at getting them all in obedience classes as I need to display my dominence over the pack!

The units have a choice of beep, shock, or beep and shock. The unit also has 10 levels of shocking and on the first day, you have to find out what level your animal will tolerate (Tyson is a 3 out of 10). I.e. on levels 1 and 2 he didn't feel a thing. Tyson (the Boston Terrier), got shocked a grand total of once and that was to find out he is a level 3. I rarely even have to even press the beep button. Usually, if I point the remote at him, he instantly obeys.

I'm not expecting the same response with Mel's Yorkshire Terriers. I have to mod the collars for them as the collar is a little too big. When she says they are dumber than a box of rocks, she's not exaggerating one iota. They are lovable but they are very, very stupid.

BTW, my Boston Terrier was a gift from my employees. My chocolate lab Cherokee was the store mascot. She was 95% blind and 50% deaf. However, if someone came into the shop, she could greet the customer within 5 seconds no matter where she was. How she didn't bump into things is truly beyond me. When she was gone, the employees took up a collection and we had a new mascot which was the most spoiled dog in the world. Planet Reef was in a strip mall with a beauty salon, a pizza/sandwich restaurant, an auto parts store, and a grocery store. When he was bored because there weren't enough customers, he made his rounds. He went to the salon to get pet by old ladies, got sausage and pepperoni from the pizza place, wrestled with guys at the auto parts store, and got free food at the grocery store. (I'm sure some laws were broken at all of the above with the exception of the auto parts store). To top this all off, customers spoiled him with treats and toys just like they spoiled our other mascot (my peacock mantis who they brought hitchhiking crabs to).

I got one for my American Bulldog when he was a puppy. I got the shock collar first. That didn't work. I returned that and got the UltraSonic collar...nothing. I took it back and got the remote controlled one where you can give him a zap at your leisure. Then I saw him run full speed head first into an oak tree, get up, sit down, shake his head, and continue running at warp speed. Some dogs do not feel pain. Some dogs are also "untrainable" no matter what that Whispering guy says. I'd try the UltraSonic one first, as that is more "humane." If that doesn't work, go with the shock. I've heard really good things about these collars working, but you have to stay on top of it too telling him "no" just like he wasn't wearing the collar. They'll attribute "zap NO!" to their bark, and hopefully bark less.

Folks that used to live behind me (I like to think I'm the reason they left) used to have 4 little dogs and one big dog. I don't know much about dogs, don't know what they were.

But they barked all the frickin time. So I called the police all the frickin time.

Eventually they got tired of it and started putting these collars on the dogs that shot that citronella in their face.

It worked beautifully. Until the collars ran out of juice. They didn't replenish. I started calling the police again. They moved. I'm happy.

IMO, barking dogs have no place in a subdivision (I am differentiating between dogs that just bark and the rare case where there is some form of trespassing happening).

They used to blame the squirrels. I thought that was asinine. Besides it not being a good enough reason, I could clearly see the dogs barking at clouds, the wall, the water bowl, while laying down, from my upstairs window. I don't blame the animals. They were bored out of their mind I'm sure.

That's why I wasn't calling the police on the dog ;)
