well one good thing about our dogs, is that they dont bark when they are outside, just inside, so it is just us that is hearing it!

My little dog was a barkaholic. It was insane! Here are things I learned that helped. And now she is so good!

Have you tried spraying water in their faces while saying a very stern command? Water can work miracles. It was the first step in getting my dog to stop barking.

Another thing that works, is to put yourself in front of the dog and back it away (by walking into the dog and pushing it back) from whatever it is barking at (ie. front door). While doing that, give yourself a larger than life presence and in a very stern and assertive (not shouting) voice, say the no bark command. "Stop" or "Quiet" works well. Keep backing the dog away until they retreat enough that they stop barking. Have them sit and stay, then praise them and treat them. This method is what we found works the best with our dog.

Another thing is to never yell if you are trying to get them to stop barking. When you yell, dogs perceive it as barking, and they think you are joining in. That will never get them to stop!

I'm not a fan of shock collars, but that's me.

you can use the watch me comand with a treat by showing them a treat and putting it at your eye and saying watch me and when they do you give them the treat. after a few times of this when they start to bark you can say watch me and they will devert their attention to you and forget about what they are barking at.

Spray bottle method works for my Dachshunds. If they are REALLY misbehaving, roll them on their back and place you hand on their tummy. That is a sign that your the leader. They know mommy is the leader and if they disobey they know I will NOT tolerate it! If my little girl knows she is being naughty all I have to do is tap her rear end and she behaves. If you think about it, in the wild, alpha wovles nip, bite and attack misbehaving members of the pack. I'm not for beating our canine companions, just saying :)

What kind of discipline do you currently use shack? I have a chow that has all the same nuances as a cat would, they are very individual breeds. I got her when she was 2 as kind of a rescue situation(pyometra). Anyways, she doesn't do anything. She doesn't sit, fetch, speak, or do anything that a dog does. She's more like a cat in a dog's body(which I like). When she walks in the house, she will usually come through the door and make a pass by the garbage can in the kitchen; putting her nose right up to the edge(she has never actually gotten into the garbage), but all it takes from me to send a message is a "hey". The "h" is silent and the rest rolls out like a growl. I make sure that I am stern when I say it too. When she really doozies up( going too far down the driveway) cusswords mix in with stern growling. Really bums her out. If all else fails, she gets the Cesar Milan finger poke. And possibly a little weird for me to say, but I really get the dog whisperer's methods and they tend to work for me pretty good.

If you are the leader of the pack, they will follow. Try showing extreme displeasure and growl at them in a stern/packleader tone...

I used to help some people train their labs to retrieve for competitions and they used a shock device. I'll never forget the yelp that would come out of some big, healthy, male labs that were in the midst of very focused work.

I think they have ones that vibrate instead of shock, but try and make them feel guilty about their bad behaviors. Works good for my dog, but I know how drastically things can change with individual doggy personalities.

    Maybe a water bottle?

Good luck, I know how stressful things like this can be.

Disclaimer: I hope I didn't sound like a broken record, I've been meaning to reply to this thread and haven't been able to find time. Also, my dog is very smart. Just not in the traditional dog way.

My dogs also a tad shifty. I was walking my dog today at school and someone walked by and said, "nice dog" as he reached down to give her a little scratch. Lucky she didn't notice!
