Sorry for using the ASAP section, but its 2 in the morning on a school night a school night and I just woke to a flooded room.

I woke up hearing my return pump up for my 90 gallon tank from my 20 sump. It was making a "cracking noise." But the noise wasnt the problem. I am fairly sure it was my cat, but the return hose came off and my pump, and the water level was a bit high so I lost about 3 gallons on the floor.

I am in a basement with thin "carpet squares" over concrete. When the water overflowed, it flooded a large area with water. I was able to clean up most of it with a vacuum designed to suck water. The only problem is that it cannot reach under the sump.

If I leave the water to dry on its own under the sump, will it cause mold and all sorts of smelly things? Should I take my sump down tonight, clean up and set it back up tommarow?

I am worried about some nasty smells apearing.

Thanks Jacwil. Ill try to get some sleep and worry about it in the morning. I am just concerned about mold because I hear it causes some health problems for humans and I'm pretty sure it can't be good for fish/corals! :cheesy:

I'd clean it up - it's only a 20 gallon sump, should be easy enough.

Sorry to hear about your mini-flood and certainly that it occured at 2am !

The mold thing is over rated, has been for a long time. Yes I'm trained in mold rectification in case your wondering. Thin carpet and only 3 gallons with a little under your 20g. Just point a fan at the floor and let it run, the air flow will evaporate the water quickly... no mold problem here.

Sounds like everyone else covered most of it, it might be time for some hose clamps as well. :)

Something like this will work anywhere, even under water, and will prevent stuff like that happening.

being saltwater... it might leave an odor.

some arm & hammer will soak up odor (just leave an open box near it).

For that amount of water, I would mop up what I could with a towel and put a fan on it for a few days...
