I've got a N. Wennerae mantis in a 9 gallon setup right now, and he is quite small. I estimate him at about 3/4" long. I have seen him take on a snail that was small enough for him to pound the snot out of and eat, and today he took 4 frozen mysis shrimp from tongs. The mysis were about 1/8" to 1/4" fully extended.

My question is...what sort of feeding schedule should I have this little guy on? He took the four mysis, but didn't want to really take a fifth one. But when should I feed him? Every other day? Once a week? How much and how often of what food should I feed him? :D (that's a cool sounding question...whatever...i'm weird...I know...)

I know fully grown N. Wenneraes are normally fed around 1 krill per week. Whether you give him a full sized krill once a week, or a third of a krill every other day, it all comes down to around one per week. But what should I feed an ickle baby one?

He'll appreciate all sorts of meaty food. Like fish, your mantis will want a varied diet. I would feed a portion of meaty food about the size of a mysid every 2 or 3 days. Vary it between mysids, krill pieces, tiny pieces of table shrimp, scallop, etc. You can give him something like a snail for a treat every once in a while.

Ok maybe a three times a week schedule. We have quite an assortment of food...from brine, to mysis, to krill, to anything that'll come out of Rod's, etc. I'll try that out and see how it works.

I know there's a thing where you "have" to feed them snails every now and then so they don't drop their appendages. Well, he's banging on quite enough rock in that tank at the moment, I'm not too worried about it. :D

My N. Wennerae is always banging on something so I wouldn't worry about his rapts too much. It is fun to watch him take live food though.

    Congrats on the mantis.
