I'm a little confused by this statement:

Was this water from his TANK?

Also, I don't understand your whole numbers thing in your entire post. You bought 10 gallons, topped off with 5, then did a 6 gallon water change. That's 11 gallons but you bought 10. Typo?

You then said "I put 20g of his water, and replaced it with 10g of fresh saltwater." Now I'm totally lost LOL. You said you bought 10 at the first of your post, used 11, but then you put 20g of his water in, and replaced it with 10g of fresh saltwater from where???

I'm sorry, I'm just soooo confused over the entire post!

All of the advice was still good. Always test the LFS water on your own. Get your own test kits to test your own water. Never buy water from an LFS tank with fish in it, they should be selling you fresh saltwater made from RO/DI. Get your own RO/DI unit & mix your own saltwater.

When we were having to do massive water changes to get nitrates down, we were going to Petco & getting saltwater (our RO/DI couldn't keep up). The last time we went, we ended up with water with 10 ppm nitrates in it. We now make sure we have plenty on hand from our RO/DI stored.

How big is your tank? What were the nitrates before the water change?

Lmao!!I thot someone might get confused...Lemie see if i can reword it.

I bought 11g actually one of my buckets are 6g.

Then for the 20g replaced with 11g. I am saying, when i setup the tank.I used 20g of his water to fill it up, although it was not filled up all the way(missing about 5g) and so i filled it all the way up with 5g of salt water, then i waited 20 mins for the water to cycle around the tank..Then i took the other 6g of water and did a water change.

I am thinking it could be..I tested my 14g which is doing AMAZING and it said the nitrates were over 40 in there..If they were over 40 in that tank then i would be having some problems and the tank is running amazing, so color loss, all opening full, fish are happy.

Will, first question, what are you doing up at 4:30 am?

Even though you are buying water from the "other" guy, I'll try to give some non biased advise. It is always good to test the water from you LFS with a TDS meter. If there is any problems with the water, I'm sure it would start with the RO unit.

It is easy to put A and B together to get C. But being able to analyize the results is a different story. With API test kits, and other cheap ones, you are reading the nitrate amount based on the color. Color reading are only a judgement call and the lighting the in room can alter the way you read the results.

    Hope that makes sense.
