It seems it would be tough with only 2 compartments, can you put a 'basket' of chaeto in one of the chambers?

In a small sump for a corner setup, I actually placed larger LR rubble pieces in the skimmer compartment around the skimmer.

As far as lights for chaeto, you can spend lots of money,
but if your goal is growing chaeto- then a simple reflctor with a clamp, and a simple 60W or 100W equivalent CFL bulb on a simple timer running 12on/12off grows it best.

+1 Get a clamp on from Home Depot, and a 6500K CFL bulb. Run opposite your daylights.

Bud, honestly, there just really is no point. The only thing rock rubble will do is collect a bunch of detritus that you will have to clean out. It will add next to nothing for bio filter. And a tiny bit of cheato isn't going to do anything the pellets won't do. I realize it is tempting to throw the whole "kitchen sink" in there, but simple wins every time.

Keep a nice clean sump. Use as little power and add as little heat as you can. Keep your skimmer and reactor running well. That is all you need.
