The notion that nuns are teaching people to think for themselves while at the same time saying "this book is the absolute truth, no questions asked." is unusual, and nearly a statement provoking an argument.

They don't require students to read the Torah, Koran, Vedas, Daozang, and Tripitaka, and say "Choose for yourself, now that you've seen all of the paths." They say "This path is the only correct path.".

Maybe they teach people to think for themselves in one area ("common sense", which is an antiquated concept, but that's not why the statement is bold), but it's definitely not a statement that can be made as a blanket over the whole of nearly any religious organization.

+2 agreed. I saw just as many dumb kids graduate from high school as I did smart ones. Went to Catholic school all the way through high school and I'm quite glad I don't have to hear the BS anymore.

I am surprised the mods haven't censored you. Remember, no religion. You brought religion into this. Catholic schools, when I went, which the reference I used came out of, taught religion as a "class" along with all the other classes. I simply pointed out that the nuns taught the difference between "smart" and "intelligence", no reference to religion there. From my studies in psychology, you seem to have some deep seeded emotions about religion and are showing misplaced aggression.

I never mentioned anything about your original post in mine. I was addressing a statement made by Telstar. Let me quote him again, so I can show you my point:

"+1 same here catholic school nuns made sure you knew how to think for yourself, and didn't tolerate a lack of common sense. " -Telstar

In my post (the second, and longer one), I mentioned that there's a big difference between encouraging free thought and indoctrination, and that the goals are defined in such a way as to be mutually exclusive. Catholic school nuns don't produce people who think freely about religion, and who are well versed in the holy texts in many different religions; they produce Catholics, well versed in the traditional Catholic interpretations of the Catholic translations of the Bible. That's their goal. I mean, they're nuns, not teachers.

This, because it defies traditional logical principles, is the cause of the statement being "bold". I'm fairly sure I used a secondary definition of the word properly.

So now, if you don't see that the conversation had changed direction between your post and mine, now that it's been specifically pointed out, reading comprehension isn't quite your strong suit, or you have some deep-seated issues with logical thought.

I agree that there's a need to know the difference between the meaning of these two words. However, the mention that the school is "Catholic" is really the origin of the topic of religion in this thread. It did not need to be mentioned that the school was Catholic Church-run; however, you did anyway, attempting to suggest, in a very subliminal fashion, the inherent superiority of Catholic schools versus non-Catholic educational institutions.
