ok i have a 55g tank w/ a 100g skimmer, 75g cannister filter. water is clear but smells. i believe i have too many fish in the tank but dont know if thats the problem or over feeding them. i have almost all the fish i want for the tank but 1 and 5 that im wanting to get rid of. have 4 cromis and a damsel thats looks the same that i want to get rid of. i have a 10g tank tank almost ready just need sand and a light for it. could i use a regular light w/ hood for the system if its fish only?

Not sure about the water issue- do you have carbon in the canister, and how often do you clean/change the mechanical media (sponge, fiber, etc)?

Yes, any light will work for fish.

i have carbon in it and rinse it off every once in a while along withe the sponge. in my career with fish ive never changed the sponge just rinse and reuse. carbon and evrything else i put inside my filter i change seldom until they go bad.

when you say "smells", do you mean death and decay odor? what fish do you have? how often and how much do you feed? You might change out your filter media and carbon more frequently. Especially if you have a high bio-load.

pick up some bacteria by brightwell called bacter7 , it will knock that out right away. also carbon is a good idea if your not already running it.

i thought filter media was good for ever to a since. i thing the smaell is of decay not death. ive got lots a fish in my tank prob 1 or so too many but going to start another to get some out. i i feel the bio load is over wellming. but how often so i change the carbon. thinking bout getting need ones here in a few days any ways. ive had the same carbon for around 4 months.

Depending on bioload in the tank, your carbon has gone bad between 2 weeks to one month. There is a way to extend a couple of weeks by cracking the existing carbon, re-rinsing but you're only buying a couple of weeks by doing this.

Change your carbon and the smell should go away.

True, but also much of GACs capacity comes from the surface area created by all the small pores. These are so small they get clogged up easily and due to bacterial growth and detritus etc... Can start to lose surface adsorption capacity within days. Rinsing weekly is really required to keep it working efficiently, although that doesn't mean it gone "bad" in a week. However, within days it is less efficient without rinsing.
