I've never personally had this happen. I don't have an open-top. But I have heard of this happening. I don't know why they do it. Those snails aren't very smart. haha

Yes, my snails exhibit both behaviors daily. I am often removing snails from my overflow and even down in my sump when they get swept though. They are always crawling around at the top of the tank, upside down on the glass I cover my overflow with, and I have had them even fall out of the tank and land on the floor. Then, I just pick them up and plop them back in and they are no worse for wear.

You have nothing to worry about, it is typical, frustrating snail behavior.

The live in tidal areas in the wild. The are used to and enjoy a little air time. Mine constantly crawl out of the top of my tank.
As for the climbing all over each other.... lets just say this species is very frisky.

Sure they are! They're just doing what they do in the wild. Looking for low tide.8)

If you have a rimless tank, then Im sure it happens with alarming regularity
for those of us with Euro brace type tanks where the snails have to hang upside down whilst negotiating a 90 degree bend, it happens less often - but IME it happens

I have found snails that have negotiated 3 of these 90 degree bends and sat there on the top of the Euro brace

Mine do it all the time, they are always out of the water or moving over the overflows....back and forth all the time.
