Are snails absolutely necessary in a salt water reef aquarium ?

You will have a lot of algae without them. They are part of your maintenance crew....my own opinion... they are very necessary.

Yes, but I have a nano (11 gallons ) & have no problem keeping up with the algae. It only takes a few minutes everyday or every other day. I don't think I have a copper problem. It is a new system, but I did notice a hermit crab piggy - backed in on one of my orders.

Some snails are also good for stirring up your sand bed, if you have one. Nassarius snails will bury themselves and you'll usually only see them when its feeding time. I believe Cerith snails are also good for that same purpose.

I can say this much, i have two tanks and while obviously they are different, there is one with snails and one without. The tank with snails has less algae and is cleaner.
