Yea I like the idea of two tanks. Living room and the 30 for my bed room I think its a nice addition. Well once its up and running that is.

If you are just cycling your tank off. Fish can live without lights its the corals you have to worry about. You want to leave them off until you want to add corals because it is a waste of electricity, and it could start unwanted algae growth quicker than you wanted to deal with it.

This has got to be one of the best sites/forums for this hobby. You picked a good one. I have gotten so much help and advice in the short time that I've been on here, and actually been able to give advice as well! ;D

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Most people probably encourage leaving the lighting mostly off during the cycle to cut down on un-wanted algae growth during the cycle. The lighting will not affect the diatoms, but next should come the hair algae and it likes light.

Myself, I always found it hard to leave the lights off, I was just so dang curious.

Next get to 0 for nitrites, when you reach that for a couple days, I would add some dry fish food and retest in 2 days. If after that you still have 0 values for ammonia and nitrite but a reasonable value for nitrates.

Next would come the water change how large will be based on where you end up with the nitrate value. After the water change test the next day and if all is well proceed with one fish.

CUC, I like astraea snails, turbos and cerith. Not a huge fan of hermits, but everyone else is, so go with the smaller types, personally I do not like any of the zebra stripped. I do like the Scarlett legged though, good GHA eaters.

Disclaimer: More than one way to cycle a tank, this is my method and preference for a CUC and does not apply to most hobbyist. LOL, just wanted to get that in.
