I've had two fish in tanks alone, and neither has ever been freaked out more than normal. The goby is always a very shy guy, and the banggai cardinal is always somewhat shy.

What really seems to make all fish shy is when they're not used to people being around the tank, they're not used to a hand being in a tank, or they just aren't used to the tank itself.

i dont agreee with you at all. would you like to be alone in a tank? i can tell you my blackcap basslet hid till i added a cleaner shrimp, than he came out a bit more but when i added 2 dartfish. he came out and swam with them like old friends. fish do not like being alone. i feel it makes them feel there is a predator around that ate all the other fish. just my thought on it.

I'd rather be alone in a nano tank. 10gal is only large enough for one damsel to establish territory, IME. If you add another fish it will be picked on until it dies.

I agree with Kcbrad, remove the damsel after the cycle and get two different peaceful fish that stay small.
