The higher the water temps get, the less dissolved oxygen there is to go around. that tang could have suffocated to death as a result of the tank being too small (not enough water / air contact for gas exchange) and the seriously high temps. tangs are very active fish and require a lot of oxygen in their water.

If you didn't like your evaporation rate increasing as a result of using fans, then you could try setting up an ATO with a large enough reservoir that wont inconvenience you too much. Other than that you NEED a chiller to keep your tank at a more stable temperature.

You were going to put a naso in a 55 with a yellow tang . . . seriously?? No offense, but if you cant afford a chiller now, I really dont see a 240+ system in your near future.

Sorry for your loss. I think you tank was a lil overstocked, causing your ammonia spike, and the temp didn't help. Poor Tang.. I have a chiller on my 16 gallon.. the damage temp fluctuations can do sucks. YOur overstocking and lack of oxygen from the temp probably caused stress which increased your ammonia. Sorry:(

while I agree with all previous comments... I have to ask... is it possible it jumped out, dried up quite a bit and someone quietly threw it back in?

It suffocated at temperatures like that. Respiration is not good at higher temps.
Put the fans back on the tank and get a topoff system or plan to add 5 gallons every few days. 92 is 10 degrees too hot. If you can't keep the conditions right for the fish then maybe you need to rethink this hobby. We have a responsibility to the tanks inhabitants same as with a dog or cat or any other pet. I know that sounds harsh but its as simple as I can put it.

I bought my chiller for 250$ it's the current 1/15th, while it may struggle on your tank, it's rated for 50 gallons I believe. It doesn't cost that much to run. I would take take the plunge and get the chiller.. better than wiping out expensive livestock.

I agree these are our pets and need to be treated as such, not like a disposable item to neglect. if you are going to have a reef tank it takes a certain amount of time and work to keep them happy. its not always having fun but work to.

Wait, was the naso tang going to be the 3rd tang in the tank? If so your are seriously overstocking. You need to drop the ammonia or take some fish back to the store. He's in the loner phase because he's stressed from the ammonia and te temperature.

As far as temperature goes you need to make sure your tank doesn't get above 84. Use fans or a chiller. Top off every day if you need to. It is your responsibility. At 92 degrees your cooking your tank. Might as well get out the tartar sauce.
