I couldn't figure out what was causing my skimmer to go into hyper - drive. I had bought several new socks and whenever I replaced the dirty sock with a new one, the skimmer would overflow like crazy. The skimmer would just get back to normal and I would replace a dirty sock. It took me about a week to figure out what was going on - raising, lowering, completely fussing with the skimmer to fix the problem. Once I started using previously used and washed socks the "problem" magically went away. Moral - wash your socks! ;D

Your skimmer will be fine as long as you rinse the sock well in some ro after washing. You can just see my skimmer in my picture right next to the sock. It's fine as long as I rinse the sock well

Chemicals in me, or in the filter sock? No chemicals in the sock or me!

FWIW, my Eshopps R-200 also came with a filter sock. I used it for a week, got tired of cleaning it, and didn't put it back in. Point is, you don't have to use it. More of a preference thing I would say.
