I purchased a yellow devils finger coral about a week ago. Is it nornal that it doesnt have any polyps that extend? It gets larger when the lights are on and then shrinks a bit at night, but nothing else really going on. I have PC lights, its high in the tank with lots of flow. Should I move it or just leave it be?

    Thanks

It's probably still adjusting to your tank so the polyps may not extend for another few weeks. Make sure it's not getting blasted with water flow though. Leathers tend to prefer low to medium water flow.

Finger leathers are tempermental sometimes just give it time I had one act in a very similar fashion to what you are describing and after a few days or even a week it started looking as it should.

It also has some kind of encrusting, sps growing right on its base. Would that be enough to irritate it? If so how should I seperate them?

Hard to tell from the picture but that might be a porite coral. Either way, one coral might end up disturbing the other so if you can separate them, go for it.

Not to worry...Mine do this all the time. Kind of like they go into hibernation for a while.

Will expand and contract without extending polyps...then all of a sudden there they all are.

Ok thanks for the advise. Its pretty obvious that the leather doesnt like the sps touching it by the color of the base that is actually in contact with the sps. Suppose I used a drimmel to cut them apart, how can I kill any remaining sps on the base of the leathers rock without hurting the leather?

Its a pain in the A$$ encrusting BlueRidge coral one of the oldest known to man. Been around longer then dirt will encrust and kill about anything I have sheets of it at the shop and its a fast grower.. I'd toss it out ASAP
