You can definitely use a dremel to cut the part of the rock that the encrusting coral is growing on. You could also cut the leather off of the rock it's on by using a very sharp razor blade. I would wait until the leather has adjusted to your tank a bit before doing that though.

ok. I used the dremel and seperated the corals. The leather is pouting, and the sps is slimming. I guess this is expected? I didnt want the sps to harm the leather anymore, hopefully I did the right thing.

leathers will release a bio hazardous substance that knocks out sps corals. imop if your going to keep the sps get rid of the leather.

don't save that encrusting coral or you will regret it the rest of the tanks life toss the rock and all of it out since you removed the leather that was the best thing to do.. I have tossed a ton of that stuff away and I am still fighting it.. Its a pest just a step above coralline in the chain .. It will burn and kill all it touches thats why I always figured its the oldest coral know to man.. Its a survivor Or in a yr or so remember I warned you..

I just want to make sure that this is positively ID'd as a bad coral to have with other corals. Before I through it out the front door into the snow.

Looks more like a porite to me. If it is, you should be able to keep it with no issues (assuming you have proper lighting).

Call it what you want all I know is it over takes everything. We had to break down the entire table in the basement to get rid of it it chocked so many nicer acro's out ,Its like a pest and it will totally cover rocks and anything on them you saw what it was doing to the leather.. It will do all just the same way.. Its ugly to look at and worthless I'll send y'all a few thousand of the chunks we have still stuck to the old trough. You better like it a lot is all I'm saying all that glitters ain't gold comes to mind here ..

But I have said the same thing about mushroom and Xenia's/cloves green and yellow star's and several other coral species over the yrs..If it was of value bet your butt the LFS would had charged more for the rock.
