I keep reading that they are very aggressive, but havent seen hardly any signs of it, yet, how long before he gets fully acclimated?

How long have you had the fish? It is hard to say because all fish are different. It may be a model citizen for years and then just go off.

I have had mine for over 6 months now with no problems. It depends on the other livestock and size of tank not to mention the fishes personality.
You may never notice any aggression being displayed or could encounter it tomorrow...never know, unfortunately!
Pretty fish however! Mine is in with a large Pink Tail Trigger, 4" Hardwicki Wrasse and a 3' Snowflake Moray Eel.

I think if it gets aggressive, it would probably be once it's mature. But it may never get mean, really depends on the fish.

So my purple tang hates him, and I noticed what looks like spine cuts on the sohal from the purple, how long before they need to be seperated? The purple doesn't really go after him they just seem to get all flared up. I'm assuming the cuts where overnight when they happened to run into each other

Since I am new to owning tangs how often do they cut each other? Is this something that might stop or is it time to return one?

Give them time. they need to feel each other out and will get used to each other provided you have PLENTY OF ROOM. I have a 10" sohal I have had for 2 months. I bought him with a 8" Naso and along with a clown and a goby, they all get along well (goby is a jerk to them). I added a bi-color angel and it was never noticed (removed yesterday YAY!). I traded that fish for a 6" purple tang. I added the purple in darkness and the sohal could not have cared less. the purple did more strutting to the naso who didnt care much either. both fish rather ignored the new addition and as of yesterday evening, they were all swimming together happily. I have a 180 with a good mix of caves and open space so there is plenty of room for the bigguns.

All that said, your Sohal wont show agression for a while. the purple is established and is telling the sohal who is boss. this will take a week or so, then they will peacefully co-exist provided you have a large enough tank. those Sohal's LOVE To swim. Here are some photos of mine.
