Has anybody used a titanium solar pool heat exchanger as a way to cool their aquarium? I have been looking at various options and the chiller option seems an expensive way to chill the aquarium, taking into consideration the purchase price and running costs. Looking through the forums for DIY chillers most of them seem very inefficient due to the heat exchange material used. Aqua-logic make some pretty cool heat exchanger packages, but again these are not cheap.
I have seen many titanium heat exchangers available on ebay for around the $400 mark. Has anyone used one of these with any success? im getting ready to purchase and would like some positive feedback.
    cheers

And what is your cooling medium going to be? Shell and tubes are for fluids, generally... you can put regular water through them, but that is a lot of water. You also need a temp difference. Heat exchangers are sized according to flow rates and temp differences. this is not a good way to go. A Fan is much more effective and less costly... I mean that heat exchanger is as much as a chiller.

I think the over all idea is to avoid the operating costs associated with a chiller. Who cares if you spend even twice as much if you have 0 to low operating cost...it'll pay for itself

It matters if you spend $400 on the wrong tool for the job.

I'm not sure about this either. These work solely on temperature difference. It also takes a lot of calculations and work to size one properly. I know, I had to do it.
Fans work great though but a lot of people underestimate them. I added two 6 inch clip on fans to my tank and dropped the temp from 31C to 28/29C. Barely ever 29.
