My hermits were slowly disappearing and yesterday I realized the culprit. As i was walking by I noticed my neon dottyback reaching and literally ripping a live hermit from his shell and then take him behind a rock and ate him. Now, hermits are pretty damn cheap so I don't mind buying new ones as needed, but if this is going to continue, I'm more concerned with losing too many hermits and the tank not getting clean. the hermits under attack are small blue legs.

    two questions:

    1) is there any way to stop this behavior? i thought about feeding more often, but how does this even work and how do i do it without accidentally overfeeding the tank?

    2) what other CUC creatures could i get that won't get eaten? other types of crabs? just more snails?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
This is what dotty backs do. And it usually gets worse. A beautiful fish, but I would never have another.

Do not be surprised if the starts to bully or kill other fish as well.

Yes You can't do much about it... Dotty backs just behave that way. I have two so for a while this was a problem for me as well. Especially with snails. You can't do much to eliminate the problem. Just make sure they are fed properly every day and try to get bigger snails and hermits crabs. The bigger the snail the harder for them to pull it off the rocks.
