Some Kind of Algae??

7 week cycling wow, that's a long time

 

That's what I thought, but I have read where 12 weeks is a true complete cycle time. All of my chemistry numbers are looking good and the algae blooms are finally dying back, my clean-up crew seems to be doing their job. I'll probably give it another week or so, then put some corals in and see what happens.

 

predea sp. , often labeled as nemastoma because it was introduced to the hobby as nemastoma. they are a very close relation though.. Was your rock from the Pacific?


Well I am going to have to apologize here. I thought the Nemastoma was Predea, it isn't. I just checked with the Dawes book, which is the comprehensive guide to Florida seaweeds... it is Sebdenia flabellata. Neither the Nemastoma species or Predea have dichotomous branching, and yours most certainly is dichotomous.

 

My rock is primarily FL rock. I would estimate 100 plus lbs, but I did get a small bit of Fiji rock 10-15 lbs max. Got the Fiji rock because it looked nice, but it did not have the "stuff" on as did the FL rock. You thinking that this algae came from the Fiji rock?

 

Don't feel bad puffer chick...i have bought over 200lbs of LR and have never had anything pop up except some little feather worms...lol Guess we just cant be as lucky as some..I had a buddy that had a rock give birth to a bunch of Cuttlefish...id like some pink algae stuff too!

i have been too, then I was introduced to the species of nemastoma here and I was like "oops". Saw a picture of predea, (forgot the species name..really need to get my field guides back), and well it was spot on... The Littlers who write a few books on algae are my nerd heroes. If it turns out they are wrong I give up.

Predea is pantropical, so it could have come on the Florida rock, although everytime I ask about it there was some rock from the Pacific in the tank too. I really was asking to try to find the supplier of the rock. Kind of wanted to see if I could get some myself, and I am trying to narrow down the possible wholesaler.

If you like cool algae, checkout Halymenia elongata. Awesome. I had some this year but the locals grabbed it all up before I could snap a photo. Of all the times to owe something to friends...

That's an awesome algae. I even had a waiting list of customers at the shop waiting for me to grow it out before harvesting for sale. A new employee didn't understand this and sold all of it. Aaaarrrggghhh. Oh well, easy come, easy go.

 

i may be the only one but i had i huge amount of this stuff it was nice at first but then it got real bigg started falling off and makeing a mess gah it was annoying lol so i pulled all but one piece out
