Difficult one to answer that, a reactor increases the surface area of the media by means of suspension. In a filter the media is usually placed in bags, therefore I would say that unless it is a very big filter it probably wont do a better job than a reactor.

Thats my 2 cents and I will be interested to see what others think.

Nope.. In the reactor you can maintain a truly fluidized state of the bed and this is where the total effectiveness comes from with the media.. A power filter will just blast the water pass the media.

You can get a phosban reactor for around $35, otherwise there are articles that show you how to make one yourself. Don't know how much you'll save though once you have bought all of the bits!

    Phos reactor many types

    HI,
When your get your phos reactor you need to tune the water flow , you should see the media move but if its rolling about alot it may actually break down the media similar to tumbling rock to smooth them out. SO they usally include a valve to slow the return, I like to see alittle movement but not it shooting to the top.
Many people prefer the iron based media, its usally brown it may be safer than some of the others, and your alge will soak up any free iron in the water as will any anerobic bacteria in the sand..

The lack of media movement may result in the media clumping due to calcium carbonate .
