the middle chamber is empty as of now so its a great fit for a small pump.. i have a skimmer im trying to learn how to get it working properly since it is a sapphire skimmer modded into a air driven skimmer... would i be able to put that in the fuge as well?

I've got an Eshopps overflow box on my 55 and it works well. It's rated for 300 gph but I've got a Rio 1700 on the first floor pushing up 4 ft which was supposed to overflow the 300 box but it keeps max flow without me having to govern it down.

I will say that drilling is the safest way to ensure the OFB won't fail, but for the price, the one I have is working great.

If you are going to raise pods etc, then you will not want the skimmer (or any other filter) in the fuge; otherwise, it would be ok.

Since that's the case, a screen over the outlet might work even better for allowing pods into the DT, as long as the mesh is large enough. :)

When someone mentions growing macros, I assume they plan on mixing species which would include broad-leaf types that have a habit of dropping leaves like autumn in an oak forest when nutrient levels fall past a certain point.

Be careful with mangroves, it was cool when I had my own until the roots started growing through the silicone and caused a leak. So just watch it carefully.

    +1

I have seen mangrove racks that keep the roots suspended in the water column. That would be much safer than planting them IMO.

Lol I apologize.. I mainly want to have the fuge for pods..

As for the skimmer most people say in a nano tank it's not truly necessary so well see with that.. I haven't been using one the past year and everything's survived but probably would have helped..

As for the mangroves I've never heard of that.. That's crazy.. How would u go about suspending the roots?

True, a skimmer isn't really necessary on a small tank, but if you do run one, you will want it in one of the back chambers, not in the fuge as it will effectively catch and trap your pods.

The mangrove rack I saw was a HOB unit that held the roots and bottom 2 - 3 inches in the water column and allowed the top to grow above the surface. It was here on 3Reef that someone posted the pic shortly after I joined, IIRC.

You can also use styrofoam to suspend the mangroves in the water so that their roots are not touching anything.
