My balas never seemed to eat very well...kinda just wasted away...after that experience I gave up on the species since I didn't have the ability to properly care for them...and now i'm devoting most of my energy to my reef tank...

I ALWAYS use a dechlorinating product when using tap water for my fresh tanks. As for your filter, how old is your old filter media? That activated charcoal needs to be changed on a monthly basis or so and the filter sponge or pad itself needs to be regularly cleaned or replaced.

I've never heard of the primafix product...never had any bacterial problems...

im wondering now if i should add the dechlorinating product straight to the tank??? I still need more water in the tank right now to fill it though so should i just add it to the new water or to the whole tank? I appreciate the help. And i guess i do need a new charcoal. i didn't know it needed to be replaced so often. And how do i clean the pad? with hot water or can i use soap of any kind. Learn new things every day :S thank you

Whoa there...the tank isn't filled or running yet? You should really have the tank functional (correct filtration, flow, temp, pH, etc) before moving the fish into it.
The dechlorinator can be added directly to the tank, IMO.
As for the filter pad, some of them are replaced w/ the charcoal and some are sponges that need to be rinsed. But NEVER EVER use soap on ANYTHING that goes ANYWHERE near the tank!
If you still have your old set up running, I'd leave things as they are and do some serious homework before upgrading...your fish will thank you...

you can add the declorinator right to the tank just follow the directions on the bottle. for the filter pad just rinse it in tap water, dont use soap

My tank is 50 gallons and theres probably 40 gallons i of water in it. i didnt want to continue putting water in when i was having such a problem . the filter is running and is long enough that it is completly covered in water except for the top maybe 3 inches. But thank you for all the info.
