    It looks like it has a hard, calcerous base. Is that right?

    yeah, if you try to touch the thing it just retracts inside.
    and it feel hard.

    Most definitely a coral then but I have no idea what kind. Nice freebie either way :)

    I was just looking closer at the base of it and way too small for a pic there are 2 brown spots which appear to be new corals growing, i will try to make a time laps video that crushes 3months of growth into a minute, but i can't start until i secure the coral and the camera.

    will be cool to watch one grow from the beginning.
