Hey all, ive got something going on in my tank. Over the last 4 days i have had 4 fish die. It only gets one at a time, and it starts with a white blotch on the head of my fish, then it gets worse like the flesh is decaying. its killed 3 lyretails, and a raccoon butterfly. Everyone looks fine eats fine then one will get this and the next day they die. i havent been able to get a good picture but ill keep trying and update this if i do.

I have been doing water changes and my params are pristine

    PH is 8.2
    ammonia is 0
    nitrates is 0
    nitrites is 0 as well.

i dont think its ich, because its not small spots its more of a white blotch that seems to be eating away at the fish. and im real confused that it only takes out one fish at a time...

i have set up a QT tank, but its next to impposible to catch any of my fish due to the hundreds of pounds of rock in my 180 gallon tank. Also in fear of whatever it is i mixed up fresh RO water to fill my qt is that okay to use?

    thanks for any help!

Sounds like head and latteral line erosion. Kudos to you for providing so much info, it really helps. Not sure how to cure it so Ill let someone else help out.

Welcome to 3reef, wish it was under better circumstances.

Please look at this link, see if any of the symptoms or images might match your problem.

    Marine Fish Diseases and Parasites

Sounds like a bacterial infection just because of the symptoms and the quickness with which it kills, that is just a guess though.

If you have a Dr. Fosters and Smith Liveaquaria catalog, it has a medication section with a medication list for what medication specifically treats what pathogen.

    Good Luck.

thanks for the welcome, Ive been lurking here for a long time, just never needed to ask anything until now...

As far as looking at that list, there isnt anything that jumps out to be the same as whats getting my fish.

Its kinda like the HLLE but its not affecting around the eyes. its more like if it was at the top of your forehead, if fish had hairlines. then it spreads and kills quick.

I just dont know what to do. can i get melafix or something like that and dose my big tank? ill literally have to undo all my rock to be able to catch any of my fish, which ill do its just obviously i dont want to.

Melafix Marine says you can use it in a tank (reef) with corals. Pimafix is used for fungal, but I have not used it in a tank with corals.

Lateral line disease usually takes weeks to develop, it's not something that happens over the course of a few days. Might want to check for stray voltage none the less.

I dont have any corals as of yet, just a large CUC that I would rather not kill.

This hobby is all fun and games untill hundreds apon hundreds of dollars goes flying out the window.

That being said it looks like im going to try melafix and pimafix. why the hell not right?

Once one more goes down (assuming those dont work) Ill be uprooting my whole tank to catch my little buggers and put them in quarantine. That is unless some kind person can come up with another idea for me ;D

    Man this sucks!
