My first thought was temp but I was thinking too high. Are you sure your tank temp has been at 70? I know it's usually a little cooler in Mass. than N.J. but the heat has been extreme on the east coast lately, without the ac running my tank might have overheated.

To me it sounds like your doing a lot of guess work rather then having actual numbers. IMO, test kits are mandatory. Even having the lfs do them, they can easily make a mistake or tell you "everything is fine" without telling you exactly what the numbers are. The same thing goes for temp. Saying you tested it with your finger and it feels about right is not a wise practice. From personal experience, my tank will sometimes feel nice and warm and other times cold depending, but be the same temp. If you can, get some parameters, ammonia, nitrite nitrate, ph etc.

Sorry to hear, thermometer and test kits are a must. +1 on getting the figures from the LFS.

+1 on 70 being a bit low, best kept around 76-80 IMO. I agree with GuitarMan, if you want to successfully keep a SW tank, you should rely on your own testing. LFS' can be very vague & much of the time don't know what they're doing. Investing $500+ into a tank & not buying some test kits for extended params would make me feel very insecure about it. You can get the API Master Saltwater Kit & some Salifert ones for ALK/CA/MG/PO4, buy them slowly but at least start with the Master kit.
