"Splash Box"

As part of my sump upgrade I am attempting to reduce the amount of spray from the sump supply plumbing by building a "Splash Box".

The splash box will be made from acrylic and be similar to the intake area of Melev's Sump Design A (thanks Melev!).

What are you going to build it out of? Will it house rock rubble like melevs?

 

The box will be built from 1/4" acrylic.

I have considered live rock rubble, and also I think it would be a good place to run a mesh bag of GAC.

Once I get it built and installed I will experiment!

Just waiting for the solvent and applicators to arrive to begin construction, hopefully this weekend ...

 

After the bustle of the holidays I finally had time this weekend to construct my splash box.

Let me give you some details ...

 

I see you have keeping a sucker on the hook down.

 

First I had to order some solvent and a needle tip applicator. I got these online at Ridout Plastics. For the lexan panels I looked no further than the local Home Depot, which happens to be 100 miles away so I had to look somewhat far ... anyway...

After assembling the materials I began by cutting some pieces. Two sides at 12" x 3", two sides at 12" x 3 1/2", and two spacers at 3". These will be used to keep everything square during the initial glue-up. In one of the 3 1/2" sides I drilled a 2" hole for the outlet of the box.

 

For assembly I taped the spacers between each of the 3" sides in somewhat of a double "H" to keep the sides parallel. Then I set the double "H" assembly on one of the 3 1/2" sides and applied the solvent using the needle-tip applicator. After allowing some time to setup I removed the spacers, flipped the assembly and set it on the other 3 1/2" side and applied adhesive. After that setup I trimmed about 1/2" off each end to make the ends nice and flush.

 

For the top I cut a piece 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" and drilled a 1 1/4" hole for a 3/4" bulkhead, then attached the top to the sides using the adhesive.

I did something similar for my sump. I found a tall round container some candy came in, drilled holes in the bottom, filled it with rubble and now there is a lot less splash and way less noise (my main issue).
