I have a piece of live rock, probably about 25lbs. I have been using it has my center base rock of my total 90lbs of LR. I was wondering if I should split this rock into smaller pieces. If no, why? If yes, can someone help me with going about this?

    Thanks in advance

I had a large, awesome looking peice of LR that I realized when I got home it was a little too big to fit into my tank the way I wanted it. One softball sized peice was in the way. Reluctantly I went to the garage and tapped the edge of the peice with a hammer and to my surprise it broke perfectly, I couldn't have sawed it any better! So to answer: yes, just lightly tap on it with a hammer where you want it to break, in my instance it broke very easily, but stayed in a large chunk!

why do you want to split it? it's up to you, what ever you like.

won't harm or benefit either way, except for aesthetic appeal.

I just got done breaking a couple of large pieces up for my new Sea Horse tank. I used a hammer and a wood chisel. I kind of worked my way around the rock I wanted to break, making a little groove in the rock then I put the chisel up against it and smacked it with the hammer real good. broke almost exactly where I wanted it to. Just make sure the wood chisel isn't a good one because it really messed up the tip!

When I looked at this thread I thought to myself.... wth.... Live rock does NOT split!!.... But then I read it and laughed to myself... Sounds like a good deal though! I have actually never had enough money to get a hold of a piece of rock that was too large for my tank. Haha. Good luck!

It really isn't to big for my aquarium. It is just much larger than other rocks in the aquarium. I was thinking by increasing surface space by breaking the rock would be better than having one larger piece. It also limits to the arrangement of live rock. I just didn't want to hit it with a chisel and it break into 10,000 pieces.....

Well I can not guarentee that it wont happen but the chances of it happening with a chisel are going to b less than if yu just drop it or just hit it with a hammer.. Good luck
