I have heard that sponge filters are excellent for a discus tank.

I currently have a cannister filter that hangs on the back of the tank. They say that charcoal & ammonia chips should only be used when the water is cloudy because they destroy bacteria.

If I take them out, do I have a sponge filter ?

Would I use one sponge as I do now ?

When I wash the sponge it should be in the dirty aguarium water I get when I do the water change so I don't harm the bacteria. ( only wash once a month ) Do I wash the whole cannister & its parts in that water too?

I know there are alot of questions here, but my aquarium is doing so well now. The water tests well. It is crystal clear & the fish are beautiful! I want to keep it like that by doing things the right way. I know, if I don't do it right, conditions can change over night.

Thanks for listening. I sure could use your help.

hmm... that is a lot of flow thru the sponge, most sponge filters use a simple airstone to pull water thru the sponge at a very low flow rate. Not saying it wont work, but not sure it will be as efficient as it could be.

    good luck :)

    You're Right

You're right. I've been doing my home work. Everyone I have talked to has had 2 things to say. A cannister filter cannot be converted into a sponge filter & a sponge filter is the way to go with my discus tank. I have ordered one. Thanks for the help !

Just remember something try not to clean both of the filters on the same day as this could wipe all the beneficial bacteria...I alternatively clean my sponge filter and canister filter (15 days) on my 55 G Discus tank

If it is working do not mess with it. Clean the filter and sponge in dirty water from the tank. If you do go the sponge route just put a sponge in every compartment in the filter.

    Both

I put my sponge filter in today. Let me get this straight. You are telling me to keep both filters, but to put 3 sponges in my cannister. ( no charcoal or ammonia )

So, today I should put 2 sponges in my cannister & leave the other. Alternate them so I never wash all the sponges in dirty water @ the same time.

Is that what you're saying ?

The 2 filters along with my 2 water changes per week, should certainly keep the water pure !
