I noticed the sponge when I got my GSP (a week ago), but didn't think it would be harming the coral, so I left it alone. But since I'm pretty new to the hobby, I wanted to know others' opinions on the matter. Should I remove the sponge? I can post a picture if needed

I don't think sponges will harm your GSP. I have sponges all over my tank in various cracks and crevices and they pretty much stay put.

Yeah, what the old wise person said. :)

I have a yellow one growing on some zoas, and I took it off. It grew back, but isn't causing any issues. Take it or leave it, just keep in mind you received GSP, not sponge. If you do take it off you can probably put it on a rock and it will grow there.

Soon enough you'll be asking to get rid of GSP :p

Actually, we had a sponge that would constantly try to snuff out our GSP. If we let it go, it would have covered it over. The good thing is, it peels off pretty easy.

I have various sponges on my rocks like for example yellow sponges and pineapple sponges, but they dont really seem to harm anything. If they sometime decide to grow over your GSP's you can easily remove it. Its like skin, like very goo-ey skin :)

Thanks for the replies, everyone! My GSP didn't open much today. If this continues, or if the sponge grows too big, I'll remove it.

Yeah, I read all sorts of stories about that.. It hasn't grown that much yet (hoping that changes so I can sell back to LFS ;) ).

So, not looking so good today.

Here's what it looked like before:

And here it is now: (moved it out of the rocks so I could make sure no hermit crabs were snacking on it)

Did you move it? If you did, sometimes they make take a bit to reopen in the new location.

It hadn't opened for a day, so I decided to move it, but the new place didn't ave much flow, so I put it back. I know I shouldn't be moving it often, but I'm done touching it now.

Its mat seems to have purple string all over it. Is this the mat growing, or ?
