sponge or no????

    ok so the skimmer i have has a sponge on the intake of the pump.. up till now i had been useing it but this morning i noticed my skimmer only half full. i took the cover off and the sponge almost looks like it was starting to sucked in scince it started to clog.. i usually clean it and put it back on but this is a first that i have seen it actually be a prob.. so should i put it back on or just leave it off?? thanks guys ;D
