I wouldnt completely count it out. I have a ton of sponges on my rocks, all of which were exposed to air during my tank move. I lost maybe 5% of them?

I had bought a red one like yours a few years ago and it didnt get exposed to air by me or the store and they dont like light cause it will grow algea on it. After I learned they were hard to keep and most die I will never buy one again. Dont feel bad cause it will die w/o it being your fault. They should not be sold. I have sponges growing on my rocks and they are not the same. There is a thread on this already.

I exposed my blue sponge to air during an emergency water change and it did kill off half of it but part of it survived. It isn't certain death but the odds are not in your favor. How about an update.

inwall knows which sponges are supseptable to air. I know that most are ok and there is only a few that really can't tolerate air.

I have a lite yellow sponge, I bought some frags from a fellow reefer and he gave it to me, was on a very small rock.. I thought it would die in my tank.. I laid it on a rock, till I decided where to put it.. The next day, it had attached to the rock I laided it on..
So I left it there.. I didn't care for it.. At the time.. LOL

I feed it when I feed my filter feeders, Now and then I'll clean it with my turkey baster..
It's spreading across the top of the rock.. is about 5 times as big as when I got it..
It's 1/2 way up in my tank, which is a 60 gal.. with 260 watts of PC ..
At one time I did catch a snail in the center of it, eating it.. !! I moved the snail, and it never happened again,, Mine is sending " fingers " out. Spreading good..
I have read not to expose them to air, maybe you will be lucky..
Just keep it clean, and feed it good.. Mine must be an easy to grow one..

    Good Luck, Larry

I'm going to place a small rock in the center of mine, and when it starts to cover it, have a frag for another part of my tank..
