hey guys i have a 3 gallon jbj pictope reef tank and at the moment its just sitting on a little foldable bedside table and i have been wanting to build a custom stand for it that would maybe incorporate the light into a hinged hood and storage cabnit underneath so i can hide my timer and all the wires and chems and stuff and possibly even add a little sump for added water volume if i have enough room. let me know what you guys think and if anyone has ever done this before some pics/ideas or opinions would be awsome

sounds interesting, make sure you make the curve in the stand to go along with the front of the tank;D. Speaking of that does the curf in the glass distort(spelling) the looks of the coral/rock/fish that you have in thier some people say it does and im just wondering.

indiana boy honestly i would say just go for it pico tanks are not too hard to take care of as long as you're vigalent about your water changes and topoffs (i think thats really the worst part of it cause in that tiny volume with 36 watts of pc's water evaps like crazy) and if you do plan to start one ill give you a little advice just keep premixed water ready in a larger tank like a ten gal or something (i dose mine so that way the new water i put in already has the right calcium and ph and whatnot).

and stony waters i plan to put a curve in it but idk if im going to curve the whole stand or just the top part that the tank itself sits on what do you think? and about the curve in the tank distorting the corals. yes it does any curve will do that but in the jbj picotope the curve is so small that it is almost unnoticeable and what you do notice is a little magnification so thats really a plus (in my mind anyway lol)

    thanks for the input guys

OO....doing the curve on just where the tank sits would be cool imho, and mabe do a neat design on the edge. Thanks for the reply on the curved glass.8)

that sounds like a great idea i think thats what ill do. maybe ill drain a little water out and try to make a template of the bottom and cut it out of plywood any ideas for the hood? i have no clue how im gonna pull that off and plus im gonna try to make it a little further back than the actual tank will be to allow for wireing and a potential over flow to the sump i dream of doing one day im gonna try to draw up the plans and see what you guys think although i wont be able to get pics of the tank or the drawing up till later tonight cause im at work at the moment

Yes that sounds like a gread idea, ima try to dig out a thread that a guy did on a tank stand it was a neat stand, you can get a general idea of a hood, i cant rlly explain it but al just try to find the link and show you the tank, he had a back that went all the way to a hood, to hide all the pipes and wires.

that sounds pretty awsome and tell me what you think about this i know its pushing it but if i have enough space in the hood maybe putting a fw reservoir for a gravity fed ato.
