Trying to figure out the right height to build my stand for a 75g. For some reason I'm stuck on 40". I want it to be nice and tall, don't want to lean down to look into the tank. However I don't want it to look awkward being too tall, either.
I'm thinking if it's about 40" tall, plus 21" for the tank, and about another 12" for the canopy, I'm somewhere around 70"-75". At 48" wide, I'm afraid after it's all said and done it won't look right.
I was wondering if anybody had a stand around this height and how they like it? And pics would be great!
    Thanks!

You also want to think about top heaviness, building the stand too tall can result in an unstable tank, especially if you throw a hood on top of it all. If you want to go that tall, I would build the stand a few inches wider than the tank so you have a bigger base to build off of.

Good point. I was considering making the stand a couple inches larger than the tank, mostly for the additional space inside the stand. But yea, makes sense, the bigger, the sturdier. Maybe I'll try to go a few inches wider on the front and sides. Would be a nice ledge to set things on if needed as well.

And you are happy with the stand being that height, right? I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with 40", but I'm gonna kick myself in the butt if it ended being TOO tall.

One of the best tanks I've seen in person was on a 48" stand. At first it looked a little too tall, but it had a nice beer ledge that was great to lean against and look straight into the tank. My next stand will be that tall with a beer ledge for sure.

I'm not sure if there is a perfect height.

If you go tall you may not be able to maintain the tank without a step stool or step ladder. I like being able to just reach in and pick something up off the bottom.

My stand, just a commercial store bought stand, is the perfect height for viewing the tank from the couch. My eyes line up with the center height of the tank. However, when viewing the tank up close I need to get on my knees. Ever since I got my tank I've been wearing through the knees on my jeans pretty quickly.

48" wow. I thought everybody would think 40" was too tall.
Beer ledge...I like it! You gotta have a beer when messing with the tank ;D.
    Thanks,

Agreed PG, no such thing as the perfect height.
I've considered having to use a step stool to reach into the tank. I don't like the idea, but then again hopefully I'll spend much more time staring at the tank than reaching into it.
Kneeling down, that's what I don't want to do.
That's funny, maybe I'll send you some knee pads for Christmas lol. Or a bean bag chair to plop into for up close staring .
    Thanks,

Sorry I don't know how to highlight quotes and what not but to answer your question yes I love the height of my tank. Mine is in the kitchen so you are always standing when looking at it if it was in the living room i would prob have wanted it lower for sitting and watching. Yes I do have to get a chair or step stool or somethin if I want to reach the bottom but for veggie clips and feedings and all that nothing is needed. Plus the added heighth gives me the peace of mind that is is much harder for a PBJ or GI Joe or somethin to end up in there God forbid lol!
