One of the worst things for star polyps is to have detritus/algae accumulate on their mat! A good water flow is essential for them, more so than lighting!

    Still not open.
They start to raise off the mat and very slightly extend but then go back.
I did a partial water change and directed more flow to them,( just got done with that)
Thanks Crabby Jim its been about a week but seems longer and I added phos remover
tonight too. I should have logged on first.

Mine closed for about 3 weeks once, thought they were toast, but came back better than ever.

I had some in my old tank and also in my new tank. I noticed that they are not happy at all if your nitrates are too high (as with most things) and lighting I think is not that important. My current tank has some strong water movement and the star polyps love it. In fact they have spread really quickly and the polyp extension is really good.
They did not thrive in my old tank and I did battle with high nitrates, but my current system is many miles apart from the old one.
So, all I would say is that if they are in a good flow and the water quality is good then there shouldn't be a problem. Give them a bit more time time and see how it goes, mine did take nearly a week to open up when I first got them and now they are open all of the time (they are the first to open in the morning and the last to close at night).

    Stupid me

I didn,t want to jump the gun and post that they opened, but three days ago they started , and looked better each day after.

Stupid me was reading the test strips when I saw on the bottle ( peel here for saltwater) . Needless to say my nitrates were twice as high as I thought.
A careless mistake. And I know test strips arn,t accurate, but they are good enough for a general reference of things.

So beat me up I deserve it;D

    Use alk buffers very sparingly

    HI,
If I added any of that reef buffer, my stars will close for a week, IF they have any PH change be it good bad or what ever they will close up
How large is your tank, do you have live rock, DSB, sump, Reforguim.
Did you complete your cycle before adding the stars..
Stars can help ID tank problems if they are sulking I check things.
HErmits can help too, if they are all sulking something may be off.
Most softies can add things to the water that require a little carbon from time to time.
Good Luck let us know how its going.

My stars haven't closed up for a long time but, have closed up to the point that I've been worried. They are wierd like that. They're also hearty. I'd still take care of the test issues though.

When we first got our star polyps they stayed closed more then they stayed open. After a few weeks and they fully acclimated they flourished. Now they are growing like wild fire. We moved them a few times until we found a place they liked. Lots of flow and near the top....8)
