I bought what the LFS called a Reef safe starfish yesterday. I don't know the true name. Its bright orange and about 5" diameter.
I followed their acclimation recommendation. I dripped for 1 hour and then slowly poured him in the tank with the water. They said he could not touch air and I could not touch it either. When I poured the starfish in it was stiff, it laid on the liverock stiff for about 30 min and then sort of just softened up and bent to the form of the rock. It hasn't moved in about 15 or more hours.
Is he dead!? Also the tips of his arms a black, I dont think they were when I bought it.

I noticed his arms moving ever so slightly just now. I mean almost impossible to notice.
Should he not be on the liverock and moved to the sandbed? If so, how do I move him?

He will on his own. I have a blue one with black stripes and he or it goes everywhere. he is still acclimating. mine took awhile so patient. If it was dead you would know.

Thanks. How would I know if he was dead?
Theres a small 1/8" area of white almost looks like a tear on his one leg, maybe from someone pecking at him?

It will start falling apart slowly with the white stuff. Most of the ones I have seen start from the inside and moved towards the outside but anything is possible. Just keep an eye out on it.

Things in your tank would start to eat him.

Ok. He is moving, but I noticed another bad "wound" on his other arm. This one has a piece of flesh dangling off. And I noticed the 6 line wrass snooping around him.

The LFS took him back and gave me credit. It seems they had a problem with the whole lot they purchased.

Sorry to hear about that. Those fish are sensitive. If they come from a wholesaler and their parameters are bad, then the customer is screwed. Air probably got to it before you had your hands on it.
