What are so good hardy corals to cut teeth on? It's been a while since I've set up a tank and looking for opinions from others. I'm really fond of zoa's and like some of the other soft corals also.

    +1 on all above

and I would add based on my beginner experience

Leather corals - the finger varieties, and toadstools
    Green Star Polyps
    Anthellia
    Clove Polyps
    *****ly Nepthea - Kenya trees

Not to contradict. In fact the corals everyone suggested are starters and almost take care of themselves... BUT anthelias, xenias/pulsing xenias and finally green star polyps or GSP tend to get out of control and take over tanks quickly.... sometimes way too quickly. So... just something to keep in mind if u plan on adding sps in the future.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Mushrooms, Sinularia, Sacrophyton both finger and toad stools, Cabbage corals. The ones I have listed do not seem to be too intrusive, with mushrooms and the Sinularia being the quickest to spread in the aquarium. Pipe organ is also relatively easy and attractive without taking over the tank.

Currently I have kenya tree, gsp and xenia in my tank. Despite my best efforts to remove them they continue to regenerate right back.

Acanthastrea, Trachyphyillia and Duncanopsammia have all proved to be pretty hardy LPS when you get to that point.

One coral that really stands out that I would like to have later on as tank matures is a Plate Coral I love the way they look but won't get one for a while.
