Starting a 33g SW FO tank

    im going to make my 33 gallon into a saltwater fish only tank i currently have a aquaclear filter rated for a 55 gallon tank, 200w heater, and fake plants and driftwood. what else will i need to make this succesfull? test kits? protiene skimmer? will the playsand i have now be allright or should i get some crushed coral? i heard playsand will turn live after time? what else will i need any help is muchly appreciated thanks.

    Glad to see you making switch into wonderful world of SW.

    Some things you might want to keep in mind when switching over...

    Don't use "playground" sand as may be silica based...can cause big trouble down line.

    Filtering needs are different for SW. You probably will want to invest in a good skimmer down the road.

    Most FW lighting equipment is totally inadequate for Reef keeping.

    Mix up some salt water and let sit in tank for at least a week, then check for copper (Cu)...if you used FW medications before (most containing Cu) it can leach back into tank for ages preventing you from keeping any inverts alive.

    I would suggest if Cu present, don't use tank at all, and start out with new.

    (Get rid of all that "fake" stuff --- you will need all the room you have in tank for "real" stuff...;))
