I want to make a small 10 gallon quarantine tank and was wondering what all I need in the tank? Bare bottom ok? I got an extra HOB filter to use. And also, do I need to cycle it? I'm sure that's a dumb question

bare bottom would be my choice, as if you use meds, the problem may be later if you forget and transfer anything from the QT to the main tank
thus bare bottom, and also PVC pipework or similar for hiding places rather than rock

A HOB filter would be good, but dont forget if your using meds, you dont want any chemical media in there such as carbon etc

cycling is a good idea IME - when I have done it, I have used filter media from an established tank combined with a bottled bacteria product

some manage with frequent partial water changes, not allowing any polutants to build up high enough to cause issues for the fish

but when I set one up, I use water from established tank and also some rock rubble from the established tank in a HOB or cannister, thus I do have a functioning bio filter reasonably quickly
